Job Purpose
The Shop Superintendent is responsible for leading daily production operations to ensure efficiency, quality, and productivity targets are achieved. In addition, the role supports and enforces HSE standards to maintain a safe work environment, while driving continuous improvement and operational effectiveness across the shop.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Oversee daily shop activities to meet production targets, schedules, and quality expectations
- Review project scope, specifications, and schedules to support execution planning
- Monitor production metrics (FDI, backlog) and adjust resources as needed
- Lead daily meetings with Foremen to align on priorities and performance expectations
- Coordinate with Project and Materials teams to ensure workflow and backlog readiness
- Identify risks, constraints, and opportunities to improve productivity and efficiency
- Support labour planning, cost control, and tracking of change orders and rework
- Lead, coach, and support shop personnel to achieve performance goals
- Identify training needs and support ongoing employee development
- Enforce company HSE policies and OH&S legislation
- Ensure all workers are properly trained, oriented, and competent
- Conduct inspections, participate in hazard assessments, and support incident investigations
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure corrective actions are completed
Qualifications
- Journeyperson certificate or postsecondary diploma or degree in a related discipline
- 10 + years of progressive supervisory experience in the piping discipline is required
- In-depth knowledge of and experience in construction industry; including building materials, construction methods, specifications, safety and environmental principles, and procedures
- Ability to coordinate multiple scopes of a construction project, including monitoring, and coordinating our trade partners with the construction schedule
- Demonstrated experience implementing a strong safety culture by application of health, safety, and environment principles and legislation
Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, with a strong aptitude for adopting new technology
- Ability to understand construction codes (i.e. CSA) to determine ability for Academy to complete the work
- Service orientation and ability to work effectively with a team environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to remain composed and pivot quickly in high stress, fast paced environment
Working Conditions
The incumbent is required to work in the fabrication shop with moderate noise and numerous hazardous fumes.
Physical Requirements
The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing weld specifications for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and will require good physical attributes for walking on uneven ground, climbing, confined space entry, limited lifting, and sitting.
